It isn't often that I install alpha software on my everyday systems. I've used Debian unstable distributions on dev platforms, and on personal systems. I've used unsupported packages, I've used development versions of some applications, but an entire system in alpha state? This is a first. ext4 came with a lot of promises, and since I've been playing about with SSDs for quite some time now, I've been looking at Linux filesystem optimisations. ext4 was naturally on my reading list. The first benchmarks showed that an ext4 system was faster, taking less time to make read/write cycles, effectively shaving a few seconds of an Ubuntu boot. Since I swapped the internal HDD on my Sony laptop, I decided to make a full reinstall, and test out both Ubuntu 9.04, and the joys of ext4. For the time being, I'm not disappointed. Ubuntu 9.04 just hit beta, so it is becoming more and more stable every day, This is one system I'm looking forward to! |
